Construction Materials and Their Properties
Although dominated by a few major categories, a vast array of different raw materials and construction products enter the built environment as part of modern buildings, roads, and other infrastructure. Materials used in buildings have evolved over time, from basic stone and lumber to modern day engineered composites, and the choice of materials used in today’s buildings vary dramatically based on geographic location, material availability, economic status, construction regulation, and intended building use. Even with something as fundamental as construction of a paved roadway, the type of pavement system used, and the raw aggregate ingredients incorporated, vary from location to location. Given that the materials encountered in CDD are first used in the built environment, this chapter provides a review of major construction materials encountered in CDD, including context regarding their use.
