Model tests of the failure behaviors of buildings under the impact of granular flow
Vulnerability assessment of the building, the most common element at risk under the impact of landslides, is significant for effective landslide risk assessment. However, the failure behaviors and related mechanisms of the building under landslide impact are often ignored in conventional vulnerability assessments. As such, a series of model tests were undertaken in this study to investigate the failure behaviors of buildings under the impact of granular flow (i.e., products of landslides). In the model tests, the deformation and failure behaviors of buildings were monitored. The Froude number of the granular flow and the impact pressures on buildings from granular flows were derived with empirical equations. Among the model tests conducted, the observed damages to the building could be categorized into surface spalling of the column and floor, damage to the column, and damage to the building. Based on test results, the potential damage mechanisms of buildings under the granular flow impact were discussed. Furthermore, a building damage classification system with five states (i.e., no damage and very slight damage, slight damage, moderate damage, severe damage, and collapse) was proposed, considering the intensity of the granular flow, damage to the building structure, horizontal deformation of the building, and damage status of the building components.
