Model Studies on Laterally Loaded Piles in Sloping Clay Bed
Abstract Most of the coastal and offshore structures such as bridge abutment on the river shore, open type berthing structures, etc. are founded on piles in sloping ground and these structures are subjected to significant amount of lateral loads due to lateral soil movement, wind, mooring pull and earthquake forces. The problem of laterally loaded pile on sloping ground is a complex soil–structure interaction problem. To study the above problem a series of model tests were conducted on a single pile with different slenderness ratio and embedded in different slopes of the clay bed. This paper presents the study of bending moment variation along the embedment depth of pile, obtained from strain, using strain gauges pasted along the depth of the pile. The variation of pile head deflection with increase in load is also studied. The analytical formulations of the model tests are also done using the finite difference method and numerical studies are conducted in PLAXIS 3D. The results are compared with the model experimental results and are found to be in good agreement. The aim of the study is to identify the significance of bed slope on the load-deflection and bending behaviour of single pile at the crest of the slope for a homogeneous soil characteristics and loading condition.
