Accessibility in the Metropolitan Spatial Transition. The Case Study of Cagliari City (Sardinia, Italy)
The multiple and complex processes of urban evolution are accompanied by the spatial reorganization of urban functions—residence, work, service, study, commerce, and leisure. The trend that emerges is that of an ever wider and more reticular urbanized context, which connects and mixes different forms of settlements (central areas, suburbs, medium-sized cities, peri-urban areas…). The consequences on the distribution of urban functions and on the transport system are substantial, radically transforming the lifestyle of the communities, especially those, increasingly numerous, of the peripheral areas. Accessibility is a key issue for scientific disciplines applied to territorial governance. In fact, it expresses the level of organization of the land use and in particular of the services, for this reason it is considered a fundamental aspect for its proper functioning. Furthermore, with the transition from the municipal administrative dimension to the metropolitan one, accessibility assumes a preponderant role for the government of the territory increasingly characterized by multi-directional and multi-purpose mobility. In this framework, the aim of the paper is to develop a methodological approach to support the metropolitan planning through land use and spatial autocorrelation of the different vehicular accessibility intensities (Private Transport—PT and Local Public Transport—LPT).
