Perception and Phenomenology of Light and Colour in the Architecture of Luis Barragán
Few architects have worked with light and colour as intensely and exquisitely as the Mexican architect Luis Barragán. Our aim in this research is to analyse how light and colour influence the understanding and perception of Barragan’s architecture studying some of his most representative works to this regard. In his architectural space we discover, through different light filters, diverse atmospheres achieved through various light spectrums, colours, reflections and architectural elements that constitute true perceptive devices. Thus, the Mexican architect’s use of colour is the result of numerous studies and tests on site which helped him to construct magical atmospheres by means of different chromatic effects. His way of using colour gave him the possibility of conferring on the design a potential for changes in the perception of architectural space depending on its interaction with light and the changing conditions of the sun’s movement. The references in the use of colour can be found in the vernacular architecture and Mexican culture, and, in some cases, even in the pictorial avant-garde. Colour, in short, plays a role in Barragán’s work that is as important as that of dimension or space, and has deep phenomenological roots.
