In-Situ Testing of Commercial Steel Building Retrofits
Buildings are a significant consumer of energy in Canada. Deep energy retrofits to commercial buildings can reduce energy use and carbon emissions. A building envelope retrofit intends to improve the thermal performance of the building and reduce overall energy consumption, without accumulating excessive moisture, causing rot and mould. The Centre Socioculturel de l’Ile-Bizard is a mixed-use community centre in Montreal, Quebec. Its building envelope is fully monitored to capture the long-term thermal and hygrothermal performance of the building assembly. The Centre for Advanced Building Envelope Research (CABER) is a full-scale building research laboratory at Carleton University. Two exterior retrofit solutions were developed for Ile-Bizard to be used as a pilot project for deep energy retrofits of commercial buildings. Both of these concepts were developed and built in two full-scale in-situ wall openings at CABER, testing long-term conditions of both retrofits on a replication of the original building assembly at Ile-Bizard. One retrofit solution uses an all-in-one building enclosure panel, while another uses wood fibre boards as the main insulator. The retrofit tests are monitored for their long-term performance and suitability as a retrofit. This includes ease of assembly and attachment to the original building. This analysis will help determine whether either retrofit assembly is a suitable solution for Ile-Bizard and similar buildings throughout Canada.
