Study on the Effects of CNT and Nano-graphene in Clayey Soil of Aligarh City of Northern India
Clayey soils are typically inelastic as they are dry and give up their strength when they become moist. Soft clays are associated with poor compressive strength and undue settling. This loss in strength due to the moisture results in significant damage to structures and foundations. Nanomaterials for soil enhancement are being implemented with the accelerated advancement of nanotechnology and multidisciplinary cross-applications and the mitigating limitations of existing materials. This study explains and analyzes the possible advantages of nanotechnology for revolutionary applications in soil improvement. Studies on nanomaterials used in geotechnical and ground improvement reveal how these nanoparticles function efficiently in soil improvement. In the present study, carbon nanotubes and nano-graphene are used to stabilize the soil by improving the shear strength parameters cohesion and angle of friction. The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of the addition of the different amounts of nano-CNT, and nano-graphene on the geotechnical properties of clayey soil samples from Aligarh City on the university campus. Varying quantities of nanomaterials (<0.05%) have been applied to the soil to examine their influence on soil consistency limits and the shear strength parameters. Improvements in these geotechnical properties relied on the kind of nanomaterials applied. An increase in the percentage of each nanomaterial added increased the cohesion and the angle of friction. The liquid limit and plasticity index decreased with an increase in nanomaterial content.
