Utilization of contradiction for creating design alternatives in construction value engineering
Abstract The design review in a Value Engineering (VE) workshop generates ideas for alternative construction designs that, if adopted, would improve the function of the original design. Each alternative conceived during idea generation will usually carry some beneficial and some adverse effects that must be traded off against each other when deciding whether or not to adopt the design. The objective of this paper is to investigate the characteristics of contradiction in idea creation, and use them to create better design alternatives in construction VE. An Idea Breakdown Structure (IBS) is applied as the principle of problem solving. A contradiction table is then set up to overcome contradictions in construction design. A case study shows that balanced contradiction produces better alternatives in construction VE.
