Composite Failure Analysis of Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Cell Stability
A landfill cell is a common unit in a municipal solid waste landfill, which generally controls the integral stability of landfill slopes. The safety assessment of the landfill cell, whether during construction or operation, is an important topic. Traditional design methods for safety assessment of the landfill cell usually focus on translation and circular failure modes, but neglect composite failure modes found in the investigation of instability cases. Although the composite failure mode has existed, there is no simple and feasible assessment method that can be easily used for design. In this paper, an easy-to-operate method is proposed to analyze the stability of the landfill cell against composite failures. This method based on the limit equilibrium principle uses the translation mechanism at the bottom liner system and applies the log-spiral mechanism inside the waste mass. In order to evaluate the landfill cell stability, the safety factor is used here. This paper first formulates implicit functions of the maximum and minimum of safety factors. Then the average safety factor is verified to replace the true safety factor reasonably by the error analysis. Finally, the average safety factor under the translation failure mode is compared with that under the composite failure mode. It is found that the composite failure mode is the critical failure mode under certain working conditions.
