Effect of exposure to fire on a concrete slab with calcareous aggregate
When a fire occurs in a structure in proximity to a concrete slab, the heat can increase the internal stresses and reduce its thickness, which compromises the safety of this structural segment. In this study, the behavior of concrete slabs exposed to fire is evaluated using finite element (FE) software that is coupled with subroutines. The FE models were used to examine the effect of polypropylene (PP) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers in concrete slabs exposed to fire. The results showed that PP fibers performed better than PVA fibers to prevent spalling in the concrete segments. The effect of fire on the concrete slabs was evaluated using the spalling data, fire curves, and data from the heat-exposed area. It was found that the effect of hydrocarbon fires on concrete slabs was higher than of the other types of fire tested and that exposure to low heat an area increased the spalling depth and time.
