Tyre-Derived Aggregates in Pavement Subbases
Abstract Waste tyres are becoming an increasingly difficult problem to manage in both national and global context. A portion of these tyres are currently being recycled in applications such as preparation of athletic turfs, additive to bitumen for pavement surfacing or as fuel in cement kiln to name a few. Despite this, a significant portion of the waste tyres either have to be stored in stockpile or dumped in landfills. This warrants finding new applications for these waste products. Use of tyre derived aggregates in pavement sub-base layer as alternative aggregates can potentially recycle a large volume of these waste products. This paper investigates the effect of addition of tyre derived aggregates in pavement sub-base materials using laboratory compaction and strength tests. A cost benefit analysis is also presented.
