Abstract The physics of surfaces and interfaces relates to many areas of modern technology, such as heterogeneous catalysis, electrochemistry, tribology, semiconductor devices, solar devices etc. It is from those applications where many and important questions have been posed to the surface physicist and surface chemist. In addition, there is great interest in exploring properties of the condensed matter at the boundary of a solid, where one is dealing with phenomena between two and three dimensions. A summary of issues which have been addressed in surface science is given in table 1.
