Rehabilitation of Historical Buildings in Africa
Cultural and Historical Buildings are representative components of a nation’s memory. When a structure is constructed, its service life is dependent on the quality of used materials, the level of workmanship and many other factors. Africa, being a land of rich cultural heritage, is faced with enormous challenges to protect and conserve the built environment, since it started to lose its historical and cultural identity under the pressure of advanced construction technology. Since 1975, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) ratified and passed into effect a convention which sought to protect and preserve cultural and natural heritage around the world which are of outstanding value to humanity. UNESCO has designated 144 World Heritage Sites in 35 countries in Africa. Out of these, 2 cultural sites in Ghana have been listed as part of the UNESCO Heritage sites—the Forts and Castles, and the Ashanti Traditional Buildings. This paper discusses the rehabilitation of the Christiansborg Castle, which is located in Accra, Ghana. Usually, the historical facilities are rehabilitated taking into consideration different preservation, restoration, rehabilitation and reconstruction methods. The Castle was repaired using restoration and rehabilitation methods as well as minor preservation techniques. The damage assessment was done using visual inspection without the use of any special equipment or tools. A report was prepared and recommendations on of the works to improve the construction state were submitted. A contract was awarded and the contractor did the rehabilitation works within a period of 12 months.
