Urban Facilities Management: A Way of Attaining Sustainable Cities in Sri Lanka
Urban Facilities Management (UFM) can be identified as a novel concept, which expanded from the concept of Facilities Management (FM) to manage urban areas more sustainable and innovative way. With the emergence of UFM, FM can be performed at the macro-level to achieve urban sustainability. However, the adaptability of this concept into Sri Lankan context has not been studied yet. Thus, this paper intended to analyse the drivers and barriers to the successful adaptation of UFM into Sri Lankan context. A qualitative research approach with qualitative interview survey strategy was followed to accomplish the aim of this study. The data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews with fifteen key stakeholders, who engaged in the management and development of sustainable cities in Sri Lanka. Collected data were analysed using content analysis method. The empirical findings revealed that UFM adaptation into Sri Lankan context is still at its nascent stage in Sri Lanka. Accordingly, eleven drivers that encourage the successful UFM adaptation and eight barriers, which distract the adaptation of UFM into Sri Lankan context were discovered. The findings are therefore would enable relevant stakeholders, who engaged in management and development of cities, to make informed decisions and thereby promote modern, innovative and sustainable way for ensuring the well-being of whole society.
