Basics of Moisture Protection in Buildings in Connection with WPCs
Chapter 3 combines thermal insulation with structural moisture protection and examines the advantages of WPC panels as interior wall cladding and as a rear-ventilated façade. To this end, the water absorption behaviour of WPC is initially demonstrated and fundamentals of water vapour diffusion and convection in buildings are explained focussing on condensation development on surfaces and within building components. Relevant parameters are again discussed with reference to a WPC with standard compound formulation and practised in typical engineering calculations. It becomes clear that a WPC hollow profile can contribute significantly to the prevention of condensation, but also that convective ventilation of damp interiors is far more effective than natural diffusion for drying out the rooms. Finally, design principles for the correct dimensioning of ventilated rainscreen façades are introduced and again demonstrated with WPC panels. The chapter also concludes with repetition questions and calculation tasks with sample solutions.
