Method for Predicting Vertical Displacement of Shield Tunnel Near Deep Excavation
In urban areas, an increasing number of excavation activities are being conducted near important structures such as railways, highways, and historical buildings. Excavation can result in vertical and horizontal displacements of adjacent structures. The effect of excavation on adjacent structures must be minimized, and the displacement must be estimated correctly. In this study, a method to predict the vertical displacement of adjacent structures is introduced. In this method, Steinbrenner’s approximation is performed, and the reduction in the elastic modulus of the ground to the confining pressure and shear strain is considered. Next, the measurement results from large and deep excavations are presented. In particular, the horizontal displacements of the retaining wall and ground heave are measured. The vertical and horizontal displacements are measured in the shield tunnels. Finally, the calculated values of both the ground heave and vertical displacement of the shield tunnels are compared with the measured values, and the prediction method is validated.
