Evaluation of Stability of Embankment Dams
The stability analysis bears a significant role in the construction and risk assessment of artificial and natural slopes. In the present work, the stability and seepage analysis of embankment dams has been analysed using GeoStudio software. The analysis has been carried out on earthen dams built using locally available soil mixed with proportions of different waste materials such as construction demolition waste (CD waste) and tyre shreds. Bio-stabilized soil has also been used as one of the construction materials while modelling the embankment dam. The basic characterization of the various construction materials is done through laboratory experiments, as per the IS standards. The limit equilibrium method of analysis has been followed in the study and numerical modelling tools of GeoStudio such as SLOPE/W and SEEP/W have been used. The effect of the critical conditions which alter the stability of embankments such as steady seepage and rapid drawdown are studied and compared for the various construction materials. Further, the critical conditions are also analysed for embankment dams modelled with berm on the downstream slope and drainage filter at the toe.
