Three conservation laws – conservation of mass, conservation of momentum, and conservation of energy– describe steady, free-surface flows. In this chapter, equations describing these laws are derived and their application for the analysis of these flows is demonstrated. For simplicity, only one-dimensional flows are considered in this chapter. In these flows, the flow velocity is only in the direction of flow and the components of flow velocity in the transverse and vertical directions are zero.
