Green Facades and Their Benefits in a Sponge City
The problem of today's cities is drought and overheating. More and more scientists are addressing this problem. Since cooling cities is energy intensive, alternative ways of cooling cities and retaining water are being pursued. One of them is the creation of green spaces in cities. We are putting greenery inside blocks and creating parks. However, these natural ways of greening cities are not enough. The first alternative green spaces were created as green roofs, and later green facades were also explored. Compared to a green roof, the facade of a building usually has a larger surface area. However, we also encounter a number of disadvantages and structural but also operational obstacles. When designing a green wall, a thorough analysis of where, when and how the façade will be built is needed. As it is a living structure, all impacts need to be reviewed. Once the green facade has been designed and constructed, other unexplored aspects come into play. Such as what impact the façade will have on the surrounding environment, how and if the proposed green façade will thrive. These and many other questions are currently the subject of research. However, one thing is certain. In every place in the world, designing a green façade is a multidisciplinary task and the measured results can be different even with the same design.
