Postbuckling behavior of rectangular plates simply supported along loaded sides and clamped along unloaded sides
The effects of buckled mode changes on the postbuckling behavior of rectangular isotropic plates, simply supported along loaded sides and clamped along unloaded sides, under inplane compressive load are investigated based on the principle of minimum potential energy. The von Karman type strain nonlinearity is considered. Truncated Fourier series are used to represent the admissible functions for inplane and out-of-plane displacements. The magnitudes of the total potential energy for deformed shapes associated with different buckled modes are compared to determine the actual deformed shape. The stability of each deformed shape is determined by examining the positive definiteness of the Hessian matrix of the total potential energy. Several numerical examples are presented to observe the effects of the mode changes on the postbuckling stiffness and on the effective width of rectangular plates with various aspect ratios.
