The n-Type Copper Oxide Superconductors
Abstract The basic intergrowth principles of the crystal architecture of the copper-oxide superconductors is first reviewed. It is then argued that n-type superconductivity requires not only planes of copper in corner-shared square-coplanar coordination, but also internal stresses that stretch a copper-oxygen bond length to 1.95 Å or longer in the parent oxide. Two types of structures have been found to satisfy those requirements. The synthesis of n-type superconductors in one of these structure types requires either high-pressure synthesis or epitaxial growth of films. In the other structure, compounds with rare-earth atoms of smaller size cannot be made superconductive because the copper-oxygen bond lengths in the parent compounds are too short.
