Building Construction Characteristics of Stone Masonry Houses in Peru
In Peru, the construction with stone masonry has been well studied, mainly focused on archaeological heritage. However, little attention has been given to the existing stone houses, which comprise almost 2% (120,000 units) of the country's total dwellings. This paper presents a study conducted by a team from PUCP and SENCICO aimed to inspect a sample of 80 existing stone masonry houses in four regions of Peru: Puno, Huancavelica, Junín and Lima (Yauyos). The primary goal was to collect important information about the structural components, including typical plan areas and horizontal and vertical slenderness ratios. Additionally, relevant architectural details such as usage and number of rooms were gathered to characterise this type of construction. As a result, this paper provides valuable information for further analytical and experimental studies to reinforce stone masonry houses and protect them from earthquakes.
