Correction of Excessive Shield Tunnel Displacement by Grouting: a Case Study of the Shenzhen Metro Line
A section of shield tunnel of Shenzhen Metro Line 1 was damaged during adjacent deep foundation excavation. Cracks appeared in the reinforced concrete segments and underground water leaked into the tunnel through deformed segment joints. Grouting was used as the remediation method to reduce excessive tunnel displacement. Both the tunnel and soil displacement were carefully measured during the entire grouting process. The measurements show that grouting effectively corrected the excessive horizontal tunnel displacement but was less effective for correcting uneven tunnel settlement. After grouting, the shape of the tunnel sections changed from flat elliptical to circular. Translation and shape change were the two main deformation modes of the tunnel sections. The uplift effect of the shield tunnel depended on the depth and location of the grouting holes, soil shear strength, and overburden soil pressure.
