Operation of the volgograd development fish lock
Conclusions 1. In a number of cases it is possible to preserve the natural reproduction rate of valuable migrating fish by building effective fishways and associated facilities for fish protection and reclamation. 2. The design of the Volgograd hydraulic fish lock is superior to other existing fishway structures because the fish entering the fish collector are transferred quite successfully into the reservoir. 3. Operating experience confirms that the guiding devices are an essential part of the fishway. To encourage the fish to enter an upstream channel and to head toward the reservoir it is necessary to create a steady or a periodic flow in the channel with water velocity of not less than 0.3 m per sec. 4. The location of the fishway at the described development at the limit of the main current is correctly chosen. The effectiveness of the fish passage through the fish lock depends on the hydraulic operating schedule of the development and on the ability of the fish concentrated in different areas downstream from the dam to find the entrance into the fish collector. 5. To increase the number of spawning fish passing into the reservoir it is advisable to consider the possibility of either building additional fish locks or using floating installations for collecting the fish and transporting them into the reservoir.
