A Review of Australian Dam Safety Regulations
Dam safety regulation is a key element in protecting communities from the hazards that dams pose. In Australia, the legislative approach of Dam Safety Regulations varies between the individual states and territories potentially leading to inconsistencies in outcomes. The industry best practice for dam investigation, design, construction, management and maintenance is well developed across Australia based on the ANCOLD guidelines. Some states have dedicated legislation and associated regulations while others rely on self-regulation by the dam owners. This paper compares the different approaches across the country, and discusses the advantages of each approach along with recommendations and learnings that can be applied to communities around the world.
