Analytical Investigation on Retrofitted Masonry Wall
Masonry building is widely built all over world because of its economy and easy construction in nature. But the masonry building are vulnerable to loads during its life span, as it is brittle in nature and does not indicate any warning before failure. Major impact on human loss in construction damage is due to masonry failure. So the strengthening of the existing masonry wall against static load during its life span is mandatory to save human loss. As a solution to above, the aim of the project is to retrofit the existing and constructed masonry wall. Retrofitting in its sense is the provision of adding material or layer over the masonry to take up the unanticipated load. Masonry wall is generally of two types such as Un reinforced masonry wall and Reinforced Masonry wall. This project studies the effect of proposed analytical model of retrofitted wall with gabion mesh and crimped wire mesh placed in rectangular and diagonal pattern. This project investigates the retrofitted analytical masonry walls model against static load derived from the experiments. Analytical investigation is done by using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software “ABAQUS” The basic properties of the bricks used for experimental work were studied and the walls of size 1.16 m × 1 m × 0.23 m were constructed and retrofitted using above mentioned mesh in both pattern and tested. Results of the experimental ultimate load and applied on the model for plain masonry, retrofitted wall with gabion and crimped wire mesh in diagonal and rectangular pattern to validate the developed model. The developed analytical model showed the behavior of the wall when it was tested under real time experiments (ElGawady et al. in Compos Constr 11(1):50–61, 2007).
