Social Justice and Solidarity in Cities
Abstract This chapter sheds light on the social capital of cities, as concerts of traditions, hopes and wills. Cities are schools for respecting differences and learning life in society. Social justice is a prime criterion for judging urban sustainability. Unequal distribution of wealth has draining effects on the vitality of cities and it is a source of both unsustainable lifestyles and obstacles to cultural change. Equity and social justice, public health and well-being, eco-responsible housing and lifestyles, safety and solidarity touch the very heart of cities and impact their potential for sustainability.
