Seismic Behaviour of Traditionally-Built Constructions
Repair and Strengthening
Abstract A traditional, old construction is a very uncertain subject to be precisely modelized and analysed. On the other hand, the originality and personality of each case, often developed during some centuries, does not permit an easy generalisation of its behaviour, failure modes and proper strengthening methods. The most secure way, still seems to be, the careful recognition of each local constructional system, the understanding of its behaviour under dynamic loading and the study of the history and the present condition of each building before any intervention decision is taken. Nevertheless, there are some basic principles that can be common for the typical cases of the traditional construction. This work tries to determine these basic principles of behaviour, pathology and intervention methods of a typical construction with masonry walls and wooden floors and roof, in seismic region.
