Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch Optimization Using STATCOM
Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch (ORPD) is an advanced function which determines the best possible set of control variables (optimal solutions). Power system operates optimally on these optimal solutions. The objective of the ORPD is to minimize the transmission line losses and improves the voltage profile of the power system. Flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices are introduced in the system to deliver the required amount of reactive power, and improves are voltages of the buses. This paper represents the proposed BAT algorithm (BA) and placement of STATCOM for minimization of active power transmission line losses and improvement in voltage profile. The optimal placement of static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) is done by using Voltage Collapse Prediction Index (VCPI) technique. The proposed approach is performed on the IEEE 30 bus system, and the simulation results are compared with the PSO algorithm. The simulation results show that proposed BAT algorithm with STATCOM placed outperforms over the PSO algorithm (with STATCOM placed) and the graph of the line losses converge to the optimal solution and voltage profile graph shows the improved bus voltage values.
