Valence Change in Amorphous Yb-Pd Alloys
Abstract The Yb electronic configuration in the crystalline Ybm Pdn compounds is known to depend on the Yb content. Namely, the Yb-rich compounds (Yb3 Pd, Yb5 Pd2) are divalent as pure Yb metal, while the Pd-rich compound (Yb Pd3) is trivalent. In between, the nearly trivalent Yb Pd and Yb3 Pd4 compounds were reported to represent a rather singular case of mixed-valent behaviour coexisting with low-temperature magnetic ordering 2, 3, 4. Main valence change in the family of the Ybm Pdn compounds occurs then between Yb5 Pd2 (divalent) and Yb Pd $$\left( {\bar v = 2.8} \right)^3$$ , i.e. within a concentration range which cannot be studied in the crystalline state due to stoichiometry limitations.
