Luigi Moretti. Solidified Space
Italian architect Luigi Moretti (1907–1973) analyzes the void in architecture as an inversion of the solid by means of a series of analytical scale models in which he solidifies the space. In his theoretical writings published in Spazio. Rassegna delle arti e dell’architettura journal, Moretti resorts to the construction of a series of drawings and scale models as an analytical tool of the void in architecture. The solidified space of the scale model fosters the understanding of architectural space as a specific element of architecture. The void becomes solid in these scale models illustrating the spatial organization of the Project as an extension of the inner continuum, reflecting the relation of the different spaces through the negative of the space sequences made in clay. The scale model becomes an instrument of analysis of the built heritage as well as a conceptual model of the project that vindicates the primacy of the void in architecture. The scale model defines a way of seeing and Moretti’s work puts the creative emphasis on the void in architecture, which deeply permeates his entire career.
