Abstract Loudness is a familiar property of sound. If you are listening to the radio and you want to increase the loudness you turn up the volume control, i.e., you increase the intensity. Clearly loudness is closely related to sound intensity. But loudness is not the same as intensity. Sound intensity is a physical quantity—it can be measured with a sound level meter. Loudness, by contrast, is a psychological quantity—it can only be measured by a human listener. The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the important elements of sound that contribute to the perception of loudness.
