Rehabilitation of the Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge
Abstract After 43 years of service, the deck of the two-lane Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge was in need of rehabilitation. The Maryland Transportation Authority also desired to strengthen the bridge, widen the roadway and perform other necessary repairs. Since the bridge is revenue bond project, it was essential to minimize loss of tolls caused by the construction. Preliminary concepts for traffic control plans and deck rehabilitation indicated disruptions to traffic over an estimated 45 months. During design, innovative alternative concepts were proposed by Greiner, Inc. After review and an exchange of information with the public, the Authority accepted these proposals, which significantly reduced construction time, construction costs, and loss of tolls. The history of the project, development of these innovative concepts, other rehabilitation techniques, and the construction operations are summarized.
