Clash Resolution in Multidisciplinary Coordination: A Literature Review
Building Information Modeling (BIM) based multidisciplinary coordination has emerged as a significant challenge for the construction industry. Traditionally, spatial interferences among multidiscipline have been resolved through 2D drawings, an inefficient and time-consuming process that can result in high costs. Currently, BIM's role in resolving clashes is restricted and responsive. Project teams must manually extract valuable data from BIM models to resolve clashes throughout the clash resolution process. Artificial Intelligence (AI) believes in having the potential to be a productive method for automating clash resolution. Our research categorized clash resolution methods into manual and automatic solutions. The manual method, which is the traditional approach, involves conducting multidisciplinary coordination using BIM. The automatic approach utilizes AI to automate the coordination process in less time. As part of our research, we conducted a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of over 87 articles published between 2013 and 2022. This research aimed to identify and summarize common methods for resolving clashes to assess the current state of the construction industry. Additionally, the article identifies trends and limitations in the current scientific literature and serves as a roadmap for future research and the development of the clash resolution process. This article is an initial part of broader research to present an AI method to assist BIM coordinators in clash resolution.
