Enhancing Environmental Performance of Vernacular Architecture. A Case Study
Abstract Vernacular architectures represent the result of an evolutionary process in which building morphology and construction have been continuously refined in order to provide proper environmental conditions in their interior. For this reason, these buildings are often characterized by inherent qualities that make it possible to convert them into highly energy-efficient buildings. The potential of traditional systems for climate adaption, such as the use of thermal mass or natural ventilation, can be today further exploited recurring to advanced materials and components for energy efficiency. Digital tools for energy modelling make, moreover, it possible to explore the potential of alternative retrofitting solutions already during the early stage of the design process. In this chapter, a restoration project of an old winery in a Mediterranean climatic context is presented. Literature review and climatic data’s analyses were used as the platform for the architectural design of a set of interventions aiming at optimizing the environmental performance of the building towards maximum energy efficiency while minimizing environmental impact of identified solutions.
