Quantification of the Seismic Collapse Capacity of Regular Frame Structures
Abstract The aim of the present contribution is provide a global quantification of the effect of material deterioration on the seismic collapse capacity of regular frame structures vulnerable to the destabilizing effect of gravity loads (P-Delta effect). The record-to-record variability of the collapse capacity is studied using a set of ordinary earthquake records compiled in FEMA-P695. Median collapse capacities and their dispersions are presented in 3D in terms of contour plots as a function of the number of stories and a lateral stiffness quantification coefficient. Sets of structural parameters of generic frames are isolated, for which the collapse capacity of P-Delta sensitive structures is significantly reduced by material deterioration. From the outcomes of this study can be concluded that material deterioration affects the median and dispersion of the collapse capacity of P-Delta vulnerable multi-story frame structures in much the same manner as single-degree-of-freedom systems.
