Digital Contribution to Urban Planning and Architecture
Urban planning is a constantly evolving and multidisciplinary field. It has progressed alongside the changing urban form and aims to design and regulate the use of space and its effects on physical form, economic activity, and social impact on the urban environment and its corresponding systems. Recently, the field of urban planning has embraced the use of technologies that allow for accurate visualization of urban processes and their interrelations. This chapter will define and discuss big data and its relevance to urban planning and introduce other technologies relevant to urban planners that use “urban big data” such as geographic information systems/science (GIS), three-dimensional (3D) modeling, and virtual reality (VR). This chapter will further explore these tools and how they have shaped the planning and architecture fields by allowing for a better understanding of designed spaces and how they can be improved.
