Capacitance Type Moisture Sensors in Unbound Granular Material of Pavement Structures
Moisture gauges have proven to be effective measures of volumetric soil moisture content in agriculture applications. However they have historically exhibited mixed performance in pavements applications. This paper discusses the use of capacitance moisture gauges at the MnROAD research facility which has found that a custom calibration should be used to improve accuracy over the manufacturer recommended calibration equation for mineral soils. The data presented show the need for material specific calibration that was developed in the laboratory. The capacitance device was used to provide reliable volumetric water content data only after custom calibration to develop material specific equations to relate measured dielectric permittivity to volumetric water content. Material specific calibrations are presented and installation guidelines from lessons learned in using these devices in compacted base and subgrade soils from over 15 years of experience at MnROAD.
