Condition of mass concrete of the Ust'-Kamenogorsk HES pressure structures
Conclusions 1. The sizable flows through expansion joints observed over a long time in the Ust'-Kamenogorsk HES pressure structures (dams, sluice gate walls and spillways) are the result of faulty design of the seals [8] and of the poor quality of their construction. These flows create undersirable water saturation of the placed concrete, increase the back pressure in the joints and increase the seepage through cracks and construction joints in the concrete. Controlling seepage by mass grouting and silicazation of placed concrete proved of low effectiveness. A radical means of stopping the seepage can be only the reconstruction of the old and construction of new seals at the expansion joints. 2. The high seepage through the Ust'-Kamenogorsk pressure structures, which continued for over 10 years, did not cause any noticeable deterioration of the physical-mechanical properties of the concrete. Mass concrete of normal density placed under severe climatic conditions is capable of resisting the leaching action of relatively soft water over a long period of time. 3. To increase the effectiveness of results of studies of concrete of operating structures it is necessary to work out a unified method of field tests of its physical-mechanical characteristics, a method well coordinated with that of laboratory investigations and of construction control.
