Manufacturing and Properties of Refractories
Abstract This chapter deals with the general manufacturing processes and properties of different types of refractories. The process flow sheets of manufacturing, of all major types of Refractories, used in cement industry, are shown. The properties of Refractories of different types used in cement industries are also shown in different tables. Reactions responsible for alkali attack in aluminosilicate refractories are discussed. The improvement in thermo-mechanical properties of basic refractories by addition of spinels and other kinds of ingredients (as flexibilizer) and the mechanism of improvement are discussed. The thermo-mechanical behavior with and without additives is shown. The characteristics of different kind of monolithic refractories and how those are connected to its method of placement are discussed in details. Comparison of properties and method of application of gunning and shotcreting material is discussed. The comparison of properties of plastics and ramming masses is discussed. The different types of insulation bricks used in cement industry are tabulated.
