Ion Channeling and Blocking Investigations of the Structure of Ideal and Reconstructed Metal Surfaces
Abstract The last few years has seen a rapidly increased use of medium energy ion scattering (MEIS) with channeling and blocking, a technique originally developed at the FOM institute in Amsterdam [1]. Ion scattering is a quantitative and very direct probe of local surface structure. The interaction law is simple and well understood (essentially only elementary Rutherford scattering theory is needed for the analysis) and the outcome of the experiments can be modeled accurately using Monte Carlo simulations.
