Stabilization of Sub-grade Soil Using Shredded Waste Plastic Bags
The quantity of plastic waste in municipal waste increases owing to population growth, development, and alteration in the landscape. Disposal of waste plastic a non-biodegradable material has become a major issue globally. As they are not disposed of scientifically, alternative use for them must be found. Use of plastic in the stabilization of sub-grade soil not only improves the locally available weak soil but also solves the problem of plastic waste disposal. Thus, using shredded waste plastic covers for soil stabilization can be considered economical and gainful as there is scarceness of good quality soil for construction of embankments and pavement. The present study evaluates the effectiveness in using shredded waste plastic covers in geotechnical applications by investigating their effect on the behavior of soil by carrying out UCC and CBR tests on weak soil and soil-plastic composites. The experimental investigations were performed on soil and soil-plastic composites having 0.1% of shredded waste plastic of different sizes ranging from 0.06 mm to 4.75 mm. The results obtained show that there is a significant improvement in the soil properties on addition of finely shredded plastic waste to the soil.
