As such, he stressed upon greeneryGreenery around his beloved Santiniketan and Visva Bharati. Today’s ideas of ‘Smart CitySmart city’ and ‘Sustainable CitySustainable cities’ also revolve around the basic premise that the environmentEnvironment within the cityscape should be preserved so that future generations can also enjoy it. Bolpur, since its inception, has changed according to human demands. Thus, the topic at hand tries to ascertain whether this historical townHistorical town has retained its environmentEnvironment-friendly face. The idea of sustainabilitySustainability has also evolved with time. Thus, the topic also tries to determine whether Bolpur is considered sustainableSustainable in the modern idea of sustainabilitySustainability. The book chapter is divided into two sections. The first delves into the developmentDevelopment of Bolpur since its inception. Though concrete data is not available in the early stages of its developmentDevelopment, literature works of various renowned personalities can portray a solid account of the situation. It also discusses the evolution of the idea ‘Sustainable CitySustainable cities’. The second section of the chapter deals with the performance of Bolpur with various measures of the modern-day idea of a sustainable citySustainable cities. It examines how Bolpur stands up to the evolving idea of a ‘Sustainable CitySustainable cities’. Various indicators are calculated with the help of SPSS as well as mapped with ArcGIS.
