Governance Aspects of a Smart Village – Developed Economy
Technology advances such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Blockchain, application of AI analytic platform tools to Big Data, and so on have helped generate significant wealth in the developed economy. However, resulting outcomes have incurred negative human and societal consequences particularly in governance and the environment which the public and business have sought to mitigate by embracing policies such as Environmental Social Governance (ESG), Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the UN Guiding Principles on business and human rights.
Ironically, the application of analytic tools to data is critical to achieving these goals as exemplified in a smart village-developed economy. However, in the face of exponential technology advances, governance in a smart village-developed economy has often been rendered less effective and relegated to aspirational outcomes only.
As personal privacy increasingly comes under siege, the public demands government regulations to rein in direct and indirect exploitation of personal data. This chapter explores the governance issues of obtaining, storing, sharing and protecting data in the developed economy’s smart village, paying special attention to the adequacy of current governance frameworks in three advanced societies, and scrutinizing technology-driven solutions which might mitigate the problems that were exacerbated by technology in the first place.
