Four-Wave Mixing Estimation Method for an Optical Communication System
The four-wave mixing (FWM) phenomenon produces crosstalk in a closely spaced multichannel system and deteriorates the channel performance of an optical communication system. An accurate estimation of in-band FWM over a nonzero dispersion shifted fiber for any optical network can be beneficial for the performance adjustments. In this paper, a FWM estimation method is presented for an optical communication system based on existing approach. The proposed method is comparatively less complex in calculations compared to the existing method. In contrast to the existing method which requires four different sources for the accurate estimation of in-band FWM power, the proposed method requires only two sources for the estimation purpose. Therefore, the proposed method has an advantage that it requires less resources, but it is accurate only for a specific range of inter-channel separations in any multichannel system. The in-band FWM power is estimated for a set of four-channel system using proposed method, and it is compared with the measured data available in a similar experiment in order to validate the method.
