Research Methods in Computational Fluid Dynamics
This chapter reviews innovations in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation modeling and its emergent applications in building design and material science research. CFD simulation allows for the visual simulation of the dynamic, viscous, and bifurcating world of fluid media interactions. CFD applications in building design and performance analysis are still emerging but are increasing in popularity as CFD simulation tools are becoming more widely available, easy-to-use, and better integrated with other areas of building performance simulation. Applications of CFD simulation in the built environment include simulating air flow in and around buildings, indoor and outdoor air quality, predicting occupant comfort conditions, and designing HVAC system outlets. This chapter offers an overview of the development of CFD applications in the built environment, as well as a summary of the more widely used CFD simulation tools in the AEC industry. The chapter then provides two case studies for the use of CFD in building design and performance assessment. The first case study explores the use of the Phoenics CFD software in performing a classic wind load analysis on a simple building geometry located in a high wind prone area with varying topographic conditions. While the second describes the use of CFD in designing storm shutter panel prototypes.
