Nurturing Inclusivity in the Built Environment Education: A Prerequisite to Achieving Sustainable Social Well-Being
The overarching objective of having inclusivity in design and planning is social well-being and social sustainability. As professionals, designers of the built environment are not only catalysts of space creation and transformation, but also owe a responsibility toward community well-being by bringing about sustainable developments, that cater to the diversified social fabric. It is therefore of paramount importance that as academicians, nurturing this mindset and responsibility at the very onset of a student’s design educational journey is given due consideration. This research aims at investigating the need and methods of raising awareness and applying inclusive design principles as a fundamental requirement in the design process. As part of the research, an experimental design studio project was introduced to the undergraduate students of Bachelor of Design (Interior Design) Program, who were engaged empathetically through active, participative, and experience-based learning methods which resulted in creative inclusive solutions. The paper concludes that inclusivity in design has gradually gained prominence over the years from a ‘good to have’ addition to a ‘must have’ necessity in space design in response to varied social needs. Educational institutions imparting professional qualifications in the design of built environment should create platforms that spread awareness and cultivate a culture of inclusivity as second nature. This can ultimately result in professional practice and careers that cater to creating sustainable communities based on the motto, ‘Designing Spaces for All.’
