Average Grain Size of Steels
Abstract Grain size of a polycrystalline metal is one of important factors that govern mechanical properties such as yield stress and fracture toughness (Hall, 1970). Many techniques have been studied for nondestructive evaluation of grain size, including ultrasonic attenuation (scattering), X-ray diffraction, and magnetic tests. Among them, ultrasonic attenuation is the most promising, because it provides a through-thickness average of grain structure, on which mechanical properties depend.
