Lighting Analyses of a University Classroom Learning Space
Research has shown that daylighting in learning spaces is important for visual comfort, occupant wellbeing, and productivity. This research project evaluated daylighting in a newly refurbished university classroom using two methods: High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography for daylight quality, and environmental simulation to predict annual lighting performance using a digital 3D model of the space. The results were compared to daylight credit criteria in performance standards Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Standard (LEED) and WELL. The renovated classroom space met both daylighting credit requirements. It was found that the interior materials used in the classroom slightly impacted daylighting in the space, for example the choice of white reflective desks produced some glare, and the dark wall paint in the mural reduced the reflected daylight. Based on the results, recommendations are provided for future classroom renovations, specifically the installation of automatic blinds to respond to possible glare.
