Second Life of Offshore Oil and Gas Platforms
The article discusses options of reusing offshore oil and gas structures (OGS) or their parts after conversion (change of purpose and design). Moreover, the types, methods, and possibilities of reconstruction are described using examples of foreign platforms whose service life has expired. We characterize the dependence of the choice of a particular reuse concept on specified conditions. In most cases, companies are guided by the economic feasibility of a particular project. Nevertheless, there are other factors that must be considered, such as environmental requirements and restrictions. Many organizations believe that OGS decommissioning is much simpler and cheaper. The study presents an alternative approach: not to decommission the facilities, but to upcycle them so that they could have a second life. In addition, we propose and substantiate an approach for increasing OGS service life.
